The principle of zinc anode protection is a corrosion prevention method based on electrochemical principles, which sacrifices zinc anodes to protect other metal components. The basic principle is to place the zinc anode and the protected metal structure in the same electrolyte system, and connect them through wires to form a current loop. In this process, the zinc anode with a relatively negative electrode potential will act as the anode, undergo oxidation reaction, and gradually be consumed, thereby protecting the cathode metal connected to it from corrosion.
working principle
Electrochemical reaction: In an electrolyte environment, the electrode potential of zinc is more negative than that of the protected metal (such as steel), so the zinc anode will preferentially lose electrons and undergo oxidation reaction, while the protected metal acts as the cathode, avoiding the occurrence of oxidation reaction.
Formation of protective film: The zinc anode undergoes oxidation reaction in the electrolyte, generating zinc ions and releasing electrons. These electrons flow through wires to the cathode, forming a protective film that prevents oxygen and water molecules from corroding the metal.
Self healing property: When a small piece of film on the metal surface is damaged, the surrounding zinc anode will release more zinc ions to supplement the damaged part of the film. This self-healing property can ensure that the protective film remains intact, further enhancing the metal's corrosion resistance.
